A new bill, proposed by house Republicans would require schools and libraries to remove access to social networking sites. The bill is so broadly worded as to include any site with discussion forums or user profiles.

Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick, a Pennsylvania Republican, is presenting the Deleting Online Predators Act, or DOPA, which defended as a way for representatives to "think of the children." The bill is spurred on by alarmist stories about Myspace, which is sensationalized as a haven for sexual predators, murderers, fringe politics and disturbing fashion trends.

If the bill passes, any website with even rudimentary user account features would be subject to the ban.
