Propagandhi is a punk / hardcore / "progressive thrash" act from Winnipeg, Manitoba. The band was formed in 1986 by guitarist / vocalist Chris Hannah and drummer Jord Samolesky. The group went through several bassists before joining up with John K. Samson, who played on the band's early albums for Fat Wreck Chords. The group is notable for their staunchly leftist political views on a range of human and animal rights issues.
Following the 1996 release of their sophomore full length, Less Talk More Rock, the band entered a transition period. They decided that "rural metal-heads" Chris and Jord had diverging musical goals than "urbane poet" John, and Samson left the group to form the Weakerthans. He was succeeded by Todd Kowalski, formerly of thrash acts I Spy and Swallowing Shit. At the same time Propagandhi formed Winnipeg-based Parecon-organized label G7 Welcoming Committee Records, which has since put co-released all of the band's records and released music from similarly aligned acts (the Weakerthans included). Propagandhi's music has since turned away from the pop-punk of their earlier work to a decidedly more serious and complex hybrid of punk, metal and thrash. The band's sarcastic wit remains in tact.
