MUST BUY: White Wires - WWIII

Dirtnap has carved out a nice niche for themselves by continually being able to find inherently cool bands adept at writing poppy, dirty hooks. Ottawa’s White Wires continue that trend on WWIII, their new album that’s an impressive exercise in the "less is more" approach that’s made a resurgence in the underground. Even with that said, the band use as many different beats as they can, given the sonic constraints of the genre: There’s quick pop-punk ("All Night Long"), heartfelt power-pop ("The Magic," "Please Write") and most everything else in between. At 14 songs clocking in at around 30 minutes, WWIII breezes by exactly like this type of music should. Play it while driving to and from the beach. Stream it at Exclaim. (Dirtnap)

THEN BUY: Soul Control - Bore Core EP

Other than 2009’s Cycles, Providence, R.I.’s Soul Control have issued nothing but EPs and singles since their inception in 2006. Intentional or not, it’s a refreshingly retro approach to releasing hardcore music, which many would argue is more impactful in shorter formats. Bore Core follows up 2011’s raucously heavy Get Out Now with five quick bursts of driving, calculated intensity—the first three songs ("Appetite," "Headtrippin’" and "Ugly") are all under two minutes long and pack a serious, latter-era Sick of it All-like punch. Stream it at the band's Punknews.org Profile. (Bridge Nine)

BANDCAMP RECOMMENDATION: Great Deceivers / The Pauses split

A couple of really strong Orlando, Fla. bands, Great Deceivers and the Pauses, will be releasing a split 12-inch on Sept. 11. A pair of songs from it can be heard below. "Phantom Strength" is a massive step up for Great Deceivers, whose 2011 full-length Seasons in Reverse was an impressive enough collection of airy indie rock. They’ve taken that established sound and made the rhythm section about as heavy as they could here—think a less proggy Dismemberment Plan. On the flipside, the Pauses’ "The Beginning of Things" takes more electronic elements and jazzy drumming and puts them at the forefront for a sound that’s fun without being cheesy. (New Grenada)

ALSO OUT THIS WEEK:

Polar Bear Club - Live at the Montage: Polar Bear Club’s take on a live acoustic record shows that a large amount of the band’s power is derived from the pipes of vocalist Jimmy Stadt and not just from the band behind him. (Bridge Nine)
