'Casually Crashing' with Cora Kunda and Nat Breeden of Arcadia Grey

Earlier this month Chicago-based emo punk band Arcadia Grey released their stellar second album Casually Crashing. The band’s growth is on full display as they kick out ten tracks full of killer riffs, infectious hooks, and moshable moments. Their lyrics confront grief, identity, self-love, mental health, regret, and living with roommates with introspective lyrics that oscillate between heart-rending and humuorous. Casually Crashing is out now via Smartpunk Records. Arcadia Grey will be touring the US (including a stop at Pug Fest in Michigan) and Ontario starting in June and will be playing FEST in Florida in October.

Punknews editor Em Moore caught up with guitarist and vocalist Cora Kunda and bassist and vocalist Nat Breeden to talk about the new album, why owl pellets are the perfect analogy for songwriting, the power of the Prince Daddy and the Hyena hoodie, being a good roommate, creating bits, and so much more. Read the interview below!

This interview between Em Moore, Cora Kunda, and Nat Breeden took place on May 29, 2024 over Zoom. This transcription documents their conversation and has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

Today, we are pleased to be debut the new video by… Pleaser!

The band cuts out rolling, shoegaze style post-rock and they just released their debut album Read the Room! The new video, "Degrade" finds the band juxtaposing dream-like images with some shots that are decidedly darker. It sounds real nice… except there's something menacing in the background. You can check it out below.

In Memoriam
Douglas Scott Kane of Doug and the Slugz and The Generators has passed away

Douglas Scott Kane of Doug and the Slugz and The Generators has passed away

Douglas Scott Kane, lead singer of The Generators, Doug and the Slugz, and Schleprock, has passed away. He was 56 years old and passed away on May 30 following a battle with cancer. Doug and the Slugz announced his passing in an Instagram post which reads in part,

”Douglas Scott Kane left us at sunrise this morning. Over the last few months, Doug fought hard battling an aggressive form of cancer and it had come time for him to get the rest he so desired. Doug was a spiritual man and found comfort in knowing that he was going to cross over to heaven and join his mother, his father, his ancestors, and all the old friends that had passed before him.

[…]Doug was all in for his family, his friends, his music, his love, his rage, and his spiritual self. All of those that knew him were pulled into his orbit, and they were better off for it. Their lives became a little more interesting and a little more exciting for taking the ride. Doug always showed up, always put in the work, never did anything halfway, was fully committed…and he got there. Doug was complete. Doug was whole. Doug’s life wasn’t totally ordinary. Douglas Scott Kane was authentic.”

We send our condolences to Douglas Scott Kane’s family, friends, and fans.

The Offspring release live video for “Million Miles Away” with Ed Sheeran

The Offspring have released a video of them performing “Million Miles Away” live with none other than Ed Sheeran. The video was filmed at the BottleRock Napa Valley festival. Ed Sheeran released a statement about the performance which reads,

"The first album I ever bought was The Offspring - Conspiracy of One. I used to pretend to be in their band in the mirror and sing along to the album when I was 9, mostly to their song Million Miles Away as it was the first song of theirs I heard. I mentioned it in an interview and Noodles / Dexter got in touch with me when we found out we were all playing the same festival, to see if I wanted to get on stage and sing it. It was an instant yes obvz. Really felt like living out a childhood dream thank you for having me up there guys. Music is a wild ride, every day I’m so grateful to be living my dream in reality."

The Offspring released their album Let The Bad Times Roll in 2021. Check out the video below.

Hotlung has a new album coming out! Check out the new track!

Hotlung has a new album coming out! Check out the new track!

Whoa! Hotlung has a new album coming out! We're debuting the first track!

Hotlung is a nbew-ish band from Santa Cruz. The lineup includes Kelly Dalbeck (Daxma) and Joe Clements (Furry 66, The Deathless). Influenced by post-punk hallmarks like Quicksand, Seaweed, and even Fugazi, the band makes really big, really introspective, icy sounding music=, It's heavy conceptually and sonically, and has some melody, too. The new album is their first record and it sounds like a band that knows what they are doing.

Dalbeck had this to say about the track, "It's about being a woman in general and never really feeling like you have complete agency over your own body. You're never the one in complete control of it, there's always some other factor going on. My experience has been that as women we sometimes disassociate from our bodies, too.

You can pre-order the album here and here and you can check out the new tune below, right now!
